MTSS Overview Webinar by CDE — Sept 10, 2015

This session is intended to provide an overview of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework with a focus on student success. Each of the six MTSS Essential Components will be addressed. Connections will be made between MTSS, implementation science, and Colorado’s legislated educational priorities. Learning activities will help build understanding of MTSS and facilitate reflection on current academic and behavioral supports.

Register by clicking here!

This structured online webinar provides investigation of implementation practices and MTSS implementation. This session is open to Education Stakeholders interested in learning more. Participants may have studied MTSS or implementation through other avenues. However, this is an introductory session intended to be open to anyone, so there is not an assumption of advanced or sophisticated exposure to be able to participate. Credit Option: 1.5 clock/contact hours of professional learning (Continuing Education Units from CDE) documented with a certificate of completion.

Delivery method: Adobe Connect (Within 24 hours of the event, an email confirmation from CDE will be sent with login and instructions.)

What is MTSS?

Mulit Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) was rolled out by the state department on Feb 7th.  CDE has some resources and information compiled on their web-site.  Click here for more information.

Tier 1 Intervention Toolkit

I am excited to share this RtI resource,  called Response to Intervention Rx.

The Tier 1 Intervention Toolkit will help teachers create a ‘standard protocol response’ for tier 1 interventions.  As teachers meet in grade level or department level teams, they can use the resources found here to determine a standard response for commonly occurring concerns.

District RtI Leadership Team

We have re-established a team at the district level to more ‘tightly’ define the RtI process in SVVSD.  I am excited about the work this group is doing and I think it will greatly improve our implementation efforts around RtI.  I will share more as we progress.

New Progress Monitoring Tool

Great News!

Over the past few weeks our Assessment Coordinator, Lauren Eker has been sharing a new tool in Alpine Achievement.  We can now progress monitor so much more easily throughout the RtI process using this tool.  We can progress monitor using data already stored in the Data Warehouse, or we can add our own data points.  This allows us to monitor behavioral interventions and gives us so much more flexibility while helping us streamline the process.

If you haven’t seen this tool, ask me to come show it to you!

Welcome Back to the Response to Intervention Blog!

My name is Shirley Jirik and I am the new RtI Coordinator for St. Vrain.

For the last 3 years, I have been coordinating the RtI efforts in a neighboring district.  I am excited to apply what I have learned!  I also recently finished my doctorate degree in K-12 Educational Leadership with an emphasis on RtI.

I am currently getting up to speed on all the great work that has been accomplished in the district so far, and I could not be more thrilled to be here!

Happy Thanksgiving!! A message from the RtI Guy

“Where do I start?”
There are many different answers to this  question.  Some would suggest purchasing good interventions.  Some would suggest looking at your assessments and progress monitoring.  An argument could be made that you should examine your schedule to make sure that there is a time, a place, and a person to deliver small group interventions.
After considering all of those answers, I have come to this conclusion:
The most important first step in successfully implementing RTI is ensuring the quality of full class instruction.
Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions may be what everyone is talking about, but full class instruction affects more students.
The fastest way to increase learning at your school is to improve full class instruction.
The least expensive way to increase learning at your school is to improve full class instruction.
The change that will affect the most number of students at your school is to improve full class instruction.
I know that isn’t the most exciting answer, but it is the right answer.  And there are a lot of schools spending a lot of energy running around trying to implement a complicated system of Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions when much of that energy would be better spent simply focusing on improving Tier One full classroom instruction.
Now, that does not mean that there is no need for small group interventions at Tier 2 or Tier 3.  It simply means that those interventions should come only after a student has received high-quality research-based best-practice full classroom instruction.  In many schools the need for Tier 2 small group interventions could be drastically reduced if Tier One full class instruction was at a high level in all classrooms.
I am going to spend some time in December showing you some simple ways to improve Tier One full classroom instruction at your school.  Before I do that, please send me your questions, concerns, and obstacles so that I can address exactly what you need to improve in this area!  Simply reply to this email and let me know what you think about Tier One full classroom instruction at your school!  I look forward to hearing from you.
There will be no newsletter next week because of  Thanksgiving…Have a great two weeks!
