Elementary Literacy Rubrics – FEEDBACK REQUESTED

One of the most consistent questions regarding the shift in our elementary literacy practices this year has been around rubrics and assessing student writing. Given the number of resources at teachers’ disposal, it is understandable to have questions. This post is designed to help delineate the materials available as well as seek your input on how we fill the gaps.

Rubrics in Grades 3-5

Task-Specific:

  • Performance-based assessment rubrics. The can be found within each unit’s Teacher’s Guide.
  • End-of-Unit Assessments. For the short- and constructed-response items, you can find task-specific rubrics in your Assessment Book Teacher’s Manual.
  • Reader Response Questions. The rubrics for the Reader Response tasks can be found here and listed in the “Rubrics” section of the unit plans.

Non-Task-Specific:

  • PARCC ELA/Literacy Scoring Rubrics are recommended as baseline templates for teacher-created tasks. A teacher can then take that basic rubric and add details and areas of focus specific to the writing task students are completing.

Rubrics in K-2

Finally, all of this work will be added to a new “Rubrics” section within the grade-level unit plans for easy access.

SVVSD Writing Continuum in Spanish

Just in time for conferences, the SVVSD Writing Continuum have been translated into Spanish.  These are a wonderful resource for families so they can see just where their students are in terms of writing achievement.  They also provide useful next steps so families can support their student with writing.  Within the folder linked below,  there is one continuum for each of the three text types.  You can find these as well as the English version in the writing unit plans under the rubrics’ tab.

Writing Samples

It’s that time of year again with lots of questions about writing samples!  Below please see a couple of previous posts that provide some great resources for writing samples.

A reminder that writing sample prompts and current rubrics are located in the Writing Unit Plans under the resources and rubrics tabs.  Please feel free to contact me (mcclure_kerin@svvsd.org) for any support you need.

Primary Writing Samples

Although the PARCC Assessment focuses only on text based writing, primary teachers may feel the need to focus on full length student writing without the extra challenge of adding text.  The writing sample prompts below provide students the opportunity to respond in the three text types required by the Common Core/Colorado Academic Standards.

Primary Prompts for Narrative, Opinion, and Informational/Explanatory Writing

All of our students do need instruction and opportunities to respond in writing to text.  The Rigby Standards Aligned Writing Tasks provide just this along with scoring rubrics.

Text Based Writing Samples

In line with the PARCC Assessment, and the focus of the Common Core/Colorado Academic Standards on text based writing, buildings may want to consider implementing text based writing sample prompts.  The bank of prompts below includes text, teacher instructions, and even space for students to respond.  They cover the three text types required of our students as well as a choice for fall, winter, and spring.  As well there are exemplars of student writing responding to the prompts.  Scroll down to the section titled “Common Core Writing Types” for easiest access.  Even if you choose not to use these for your writing samples, they are a great instructional resource to ready ourselves for the new assessment.
