Instructional Websites and Resources for Classroom Use:

Real World Math:  http://www.realworldmath.org/     “Real World Math is a collection of free math activities for Google Earth designed for students and educators.  Mathematics is much more than a set of problems in a textbook.  In the virtual world of Google Earth, concepts and challenges can be presented in a meaningful way that portrays the usefulness of the ideas.”

Google Lit Trips:  http://www.googlelittrips.com/GoogleLit/Home.html    “Google Lit Trips are free downloadable files that mark the journeys of characters from famous literature on the surface of Google Earth.  At each location along the journey there are placemarks with pop-up windows containing a variety of resources including relevant media, thought provoking discussion starters, and links to supplementary information about ‘real world’ references made in that particular portion of the story.”

PBS: http://rmpbs.pbslearningmedia.org/     PBS lesson plans, videos, documents, and images used to engage the students in 21st Century skills about many social studies topics.  All lessons are based on Common Core Standards.

Newsela:  http://newsela.com  Daily news articles from major publications that you can adjust for different Lexile levels.  It also looks great on the iPad.

Beyond the Bubble: https://beyondthebubble.stanford.edu/.   Beyond the Bubble unlocks the vast digital archive of the Library of Congress to create a new generation of history assessments. Developed by the Stanford History Education Group (http://sheg.stanford.edu), Beyond the Bubble is the cornerstone of SHEG’s membership in the Library of Congress’s Teaching with Primary Sources Educational Consortium. We “go beyond the bubble” by offering easy-to-use assessments that capture students’ knowledge in action – rather than their recall of discrete facts.

Lessons on Local Government:   http://www.lessonsonlocalgovernment.org/index.htmlLessons on Local Government is a resource for elementary, middle, and high school teachers in Colorado to easily find curriculum materials that meet the state’s social studies and civics standards.  Here you’ll find numerous local government lesson plans to use in your classroom.  Feel free to use them as they are or customize them to make them resonate better with your students.  Lessons on Local Government is a supplementary resource intended to help save you time searching for and planning lessons pertaining to Colorado social studies and civics standards. 

History Colorado Online Exhibits:  http://www.exhibits.historycolorado.org Great interactive online exhibits that students can go through at their own pace.  The museum is developing a digital badges program that students can earn badges as they go through the exhibit.  Exhibits include: Amache, Bent’s Fort, Lincoln Hills, Mesa Verde, and Tribal Paths.

Boulder County Latino History Project:  http://bocolatinohistory.colorado.edu/  Here are thousands of wonderful primary source documents that you could use in your class about Latino impacts in this area.  The photographs are amazing and could help students see what life was like during various time periods in this area and the impacts of the Latino population throughout history.

 

Instructional Materials:

4th Grade Social Studies Content Writing Tasks: Created by the 4th grade team at Columbine following the Literacy Design Collaborative Model.  The team created content area writing prompts for each social studies evidence outcome on the report card.  Click here to access the document.

National Geographic has a new resource for educators: FREE tabletop-sized state maps.  The maps were designed to reflect spatial thinking research at the elementary level. All maps visually represent the appropriate amount of information for K-5 students. However, they can be used by any grade level.  Click here to find the map of Colorado.  Look for state GeoTours coming soon from National Geographic!

GPS Units for Loan:    http://www.uccs.edu/coga/resources/gps-units-for-loan.html   COGA has 10 GPS units available for educators to check out, using these tools to enhance geospatial awareness and curriculum.  These are available free for your use in classrooms or informal education settings.

Artifact Kits from History Colorado.   http://www.historycolorado.org/educators/check-out-artifact-kits  Packed with artifacts and activities, our history kits bring part of the museum to your school. Reserve one or all of the kits and watch the excitement of discovery on your students’ faces. Cliff Dwellers Kit, Colorado Miners Kit, Grandmother Trunks, Boom or Bust, a Denver Artifact Kit, and Mountain Man Kit are all available.

Teacher Trunks from Longmont History Museum.  http://www.longmontcolorado.gov/departments/departments-e-m/museum/education/teacher-trunks.  Trunks can be rented from the museum for $8.00 per week.

Colorado Experience Documentaries:  http://www.historycolorado.org/families/colorado-experience-documentaries. A television series of 13 half-hour episodes, produced by History Colorado and Rocky Mountain PBS, dedicated to preserving and celebrating the people, events, and places that have shaped Colorado.

The Korematsu Institute (www.korematsuinstitute.org) has a wealth of free teaching materials that help students learn about Fred and the Japanese American internment during World War II.  Items include: a K-12 teaching guide, a Fred Korematsu classroom poster, videos appropriate for students at all grade levels, a one-day lesson plan/PowerPoint presentation, the 24 minute version of the Emmy Award winning video, “Of Civil Wrongs and Rights, the Fred Korematsu Story.”

Project Heart: www.ottercares.org/heart is a unit created for elementary and middle school students about philanthropy.  It includes daily lessons, PowerPoint presentations, video clips, and student handouts.  It is a great unit, especially for 3 and 4th grade students!
