Please join us next month (11/29/12 at 2:30 PM) as we begin to chart course after the Mill Levy decision.  This meeting also yielded some important feedback about our Parent Information and Registration Nights for incoming 9th graders.  We will look to incorporate more students into the programs.  Additionally, administrative team members are inviting tours for Thursdays now through January for prospective families; making an effort to answer individual questions in this very important transition.

Help us to refresh our mission statement!

Weekly blog for October 12th

Silver Creek High School

Weekly Update for Friday, October 12th

Raptor Families,
This fall has brought about many accomplishments by both our students and staff.  We are all very proud of the effort being given to make Silver Creek High School an excellent high school!
Some of the many accolades include the announcement of thirteen Advanced Placement Scholars.  This accomplishment denotes students having taken at least three AP tests and having achieved a score of three or better.  Many students took far more than the requisite three tests to achieve this honor. Besides our AP Scholars, on Monday night we will be inducting fifty-two new members into our National Honor Society.  This prestigious honor is offered to students who uphold the highest values of scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship.

While our list of accomplishments continues to grow — including such awards as the number one ranked library in the state of Colorado, a diamond designation for teacher Kristin Holtz by the National Speech and Forensics League, four more teachers becoming certified to offer Advanced Placement classes, state ranked athletic teams, our greatest number of all-state musician selections, and don’t forget about our Marching Zombies being featured on the Travel Channel October 21 at 7:00 p.m. — we are not without our challenges.

This year we are experiencing larger class sizes.  Some academic classes have 35-38 students in them.  I applaud the efforts of our teachers to maintain student engagement and continue increasing academic achievement in these unprecedented times for Silver Creek. While last year we were able to stave off the increased class size in the 9/10 grades, that is no longer the reality.  As I have spoken to our school board, the Longmont Chamber of Commerce and those who attended the “Debates” held at Silver Creek last week; our biggest challenge at Silver Creek is to continue offering an excellent educational product preparing kids with choices for their future, while at the same time experiencing a continued reduction in state educational budgets.

I invite you to be part of our Accountability Committee as we examine the complexities of budget, staffing, curriculum and social issues that impact our school.  I also invite you to help work with our Parent Organizations.  SCOPA and RABC would love to see you as a member or as a participant in their weekly Bingo sessions.  Our Silver Creek Education Foundation could also use your support as we fundraise for classrooms Brick Buy Brick.

Our staff has embraced the challenges that we face.  We are motivated and working S.M.A.R.T. to implement our professional goals within departments and with all teachers.  Be on the lookout as we intend to share these goals in an upcoming weekly update.  Also, be on the lookout for an incredible learning opportunity we’ve been working on with our local and national technology companies “Silver Creek Mobile App Hackathon 2012”, coming in December.

A HUGE thank you to all of our wonderful students, staff, parents and community partners in making Silver Creek a leader amongst high schools!

Erick Finnestead
Principal

S1 Semester: Ongoing grade scores

Collegiate Prep Test Day

One of our priorities (and an area in which we have received the highest possible marks in state accountability) is preparing students for success after high school.  For over ninety percent of Silver Creek graduates, the future begins with college.  And since entrance into most colleges (as well as vocational placement) entails success on standardized tests like the ACT and SAT, we have instituted Collegiate PrepTest Day for all 9th, 10th and 11th grade students.  The 9th and 10th grade assessments are aligned with (and created by) the ACT, so the data provides an indication of where students are, how much they’ve grown, and the practice helps our students become more comfortable with standardized testing formats.

On Wednesday October 17th, all students will participate in their grade-specific test.  Test fees can be paid via  RevTrak, or by cash/check in the counseling office.

Freshmen will take the EXPLORE test, which includes a non-testing section devoted to career interests. The fee for the EXPLORE test is $10.  EXPLORE

Sophomores will take the PLAN test, test number two in the ACT sequence, which not only projects a student’s likely score on the ACT, but also addresses ways for students to improve before they take the mandatory ACT as juniors in April of 2014. The PLAN also contains an interest inventory which follows on the EXPLORE’s diagnostic and provides still more information on potential careers and college majors. The fee for the PLAN test is $12.  PLAN

Juniors will take the PSAT. A precursor to the SAT, the PSAT “measures critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills (see PSAT website link below).  This test doesn’t require you to recall specific facts from your classes. Besides helping students prepare for both the ACT and the SAT, the PSAT is also the measure used to determine National Merit Scholarship eligibility. For the past several years, Silver Creek has boasted at least one National Merit Semi-finalist, which continues to enhance our academic reputation as one of the top 5% of all high schools in the nation.  The fee for the PSAT is $15.  PSAT

Seniors attend classes  beginning at 11:24 a.m.

RABC

Raptor Activities Booster Club
Every year we hear that we are facing yet another state budget cut in education and the activities at Silver Creek take their fair share of the hit.  Currently, our athletic programs receive state/district funding that provides for an internal school operating budget of $18,000. Funding is also provided to help cover the expense of most in-state travel and officials, when athletic fees may not. The remainder of expenses are met through fund-raising events sponsored by the various teams or through the Raptor Activities Booster Club (RABC).  RABC has also grown quite active in providing financial support to clubs and organizations throughout Silver Creek.  When the needs can’t be met, families are left picking up the expenses or the programs get cut.

How can you help?
1.  The most lucrative RABC fund raiser is, by far, our weekly Bingo sessions.  Historically, Bingo has brought in approximately $50,000 a year to RABC.  Through these funds we were able to purchase supplies for our athletic trainer, volleyball nets, folding chairs, basketball hoops, football headsets, event loudspeakers, wrestling mats, cheer mats, a defibrillator… the list goes on and on.  However, our ability to continue doing this in the future is dependent on a strong volunteer base and a large group of bingo players.  The health of our Bingo program will directly impact our athletic program and critical activities.
2.  Join the RABC.  Membership cost is only $20 per family per year.  If every family in Silver Creek joined, it would provide $20,000 towards our programs.

E-Books  $10
You can designate a classroom, sport, club, or activity to receive the profit from the books.  Just stop by the school store (Thursday 10-1) and pick up a book or order on-line at silvercreekstore.org.   Let’s raise money for our school and save money at the same time!!!  $20 at King Soopers…..you make money on the deal!

BINGO on Wednesday nights at 7 p.m.
Gather some friends and neighbors and play Bingo at the Longmont Bingo Alley at 640 19th Ave.  It’s LOTS OF FUN and the proceeds support all activities at Silver Creek High.  “Silver Creek” Bingo night is EVERY Wednesday at 7 pm.  Hope to see you there!

Bingo Help!
Bingo is a huge fundraiser for our school and our athletic department.  We hold Bingo every Wednesday night from 5:30 until about 9:00 at the Longmont Bingo hall 640 19th Avenue, Longmont, CO 80501.

Conferences

There is NO SCHOOL on Friday October 12th.

Help us to refresh our mission statement!

Parents, please help us to refresh our mission statement.  Our current mission statement was created several years back when Silver Creek did not have many of the great scholastic opportunities we have today.  This mission statement review is the culminating work of student, parent and staff committees.  Please click on the following LINK and help us to refine the mission statement for Silver Creek High School.

PSAT

Seniors will attend a class meeting from 9:15-10:30.  They’ll receive information about Commitment to Graduate – C2G

School Board Update/Education Foundation

The Silver Creek High School Education Foundation is hosting school board President, John Creighton, on Wednesday, October 10, at 7:00 a.m.    Please join us in the IMC from 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. for an update from the Board.  A representative of Grassroots St. Vrain will also provide an update on their current activities and opportunities for parent volunteers.
