  Silver Creek High School

Weekly Update for Friday, August 30th

Raptor Families,

Thank you for your attendance at Back to School Night.  It was a terrific evening and we appreciate your time and investment in meeting our teachers.  We are soon to be adding more teachers on account of our student population growth.  In the next two weeks we will be hiring in Spanish, Social Studies and Special Education.  We look forward to introducing these new teachers to you and reducing some class sizes.

Please be reminded that we have a late start day on September 4, 2013.  Also, we will be posting instructions for our online Parent Teacher Conference Scheduler the week of September 16, 2013.  Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for October 9 and 10.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Counseling Corner

Tutoring Club of Longmont offers free ACT/SAT tests once a month to benefit High Schools in Saint Vrain Valley School District.

Once a month the Tutoring Club of Longmont offers free practice ACT and SAT tests to High School students.   These tests are an excellent opportunity for students to experience a full-length ACT or SAT test in a relaxed environment without the fear of this score going on a college transcript.   Each student’s score and full analysis of a student’s strengths and weaknesses will be available 3 days following.  There is no pressure to sign up for our program and students are only presented with how our program could help them.    I have attached a Flyer that was approved by Saint Vrain if you desire to post it or give it to prospective students.

Tutoring Club of Longmont is conveniently located on the diagonal of Ken Pratt and Nelson.   All tests are scheduled on Saturdays and start promptly at 9:00 am.  If a student would like to take one of these tests, please have them email us at Longmontco@tutoringclub.com.

If you need any more information please give us a call (303) 651-0800.

Weekly blog for August 23rd

  Silver Creek High School

Weekly Update for Friday, August 23rd

Principal’s Message

Raptor Nation,

I want to welcome all of you to the 2013-2014 school year.  This plans to be a very exciting year at Silver Creek High School as we welcome the class of 2017 and all of our new students.  The class of 2017 is the largest in the history of Silver Creek, boasting 322 wonderful and amazing students ready to leave their legacy.

As part of our annual tradition of asking our incoming students for their “Commitment to Graduate”, our students signed a giant replica of their diploma.  For the next 720 school days we will focus on that special date that happens in May each year.  For the class of 2014, it’s closer than you think!

We have several new staff members this year and are delighted at the wealth of talent they bring to Silver Creek.

Nikki Tobias will be teaching in English and joins us after having provided instructional leadership in Fort Lupton.  She recently earned her master’s degree from CU in Educational Equity and Cultural Diversity.

Christine Jirsa joins us in our Spanish Department after having served as both teacher and administrator in Oregon and New Mexico.

Bryon Booher will be teaching Social Studies and hails from North Carolina where he taught in Asheville and Raleigh, along with preparing teachers at Duke University.

Jenica Northrup will be coaching tennis and teaching Chemistry and Biology after having completed her student teaching at Silver Creek and graduating at the top of her class at CU.

Pete Defilippo will be coaching soccer and teaching English after also having student taught at Silver Creek and graduating from CU.

Christian Noon will be leading our bands after having successfully rebuilt a performing arts program at Elizabeth High School.

Laura Ling will join us all the way from China as she takes the reins of our new Chinese Language Program.  Laura will be arriving on August 22, 2013 after undergoing extensive training.  Laura has previously taught at a top ranking high school in China.

Ginger Guderjahn will be our Building Team Leader in Special Education as well as teaching our Global Skills classes.  She has terrific experience from Frederick High School and has much experience having served as an Occupational Therapist.

Robert Meltzer will join our Special Education Department as a Paraprofessional, having previously taught in New York and Aurora.

Judith Thomas will be joining our Counseling staff, serving the students with last names beginning with A-Go.  Judith joins us after having served as a counselor at Westview Middle School and also at Boulder High School.

Finally, Karen Norris joins us as our new Assistant Principal.  She is most recently from Fort Worth, Texas where she has served as a Middle School Principal, High School Assistant Principal, Director of International High School Programs and as an English Teacher.

As we look at 2013-2014, Silver Creek is seeing the largest number of students ever enrolled.  Currently, we are seeing growth above 1150 students, up from 1000 students in 2012-2013.  With this in mind we are working closely to assess the need for additional teachers.  There are some large class sizes, especially in our Spanish classes, and we intend to hire additional staff to support and reduce the class size.  Attendance counts are extremely important next week, as additional staffing depends on it.  Please make sure to excuse your student if he/she is absent, in an effort to assist us in demonstrating our actual enrollment.

The sky truly is the limit for 2013-2014 as we are all working studiously to provide your child the best possible high school opportunity.  We are ready for them to soar and be a part of “Raptor Nation”!

Welcome Back,

Erick Finnestead

SCHS Education Foundation

Parents – here is a great way to help our school.

The SCHS Education Foundation provides financial support to Silver Creek teachers, staff and classrooms.  Through the generosity and the support of SCHS families and friends in the community, the Foundation has donated over $38,000 to the school.  Seventy mini-grants have been issued to SCHS teachers and staff for items such as novel sets, document cameras, laptops, Nooks, audio books, subscriptions and conference fees.  Recently, we contributed to a new laptop cart for the school.

Silver Creek parents, staff and students serve on the Board of Directors, committees and other projects.  You can help the Foundation in a number of ways:

  1. Purchase a $5 King Soopers Reloadable Fundraising Card from us.  Reload it at your convenience before your purchases and the Education Foundation will receive 5% of your purchase amounts throughout the year.

  2. Donate to the Brick By Brick fundraiser and have a “brick” engraved with 3-6 lines of names/text. Icons are also available. Our next installation will be later this fall.

  3. Volunteer to help on one of our projects or committees.  We need help in the following areas:

  • Design  flyers, posters and banners

  • Grant writing

  • Fundraiser Event planning committee

  • Mini-grant Committee

  • Corporate Sponsors Committee  (help us reach out to potential corporate sponsors and supporters)

  • Marketing Committee

  • Website maintenance

  • King Soopers Reloadable Card fundraiser coordinators

  • Brick By Brick Fundraiser Committee  (opportunities include marketing, maintaining orders, serve as liaison with Engraver)

If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact us at schsedfoundation@gmail.com

Brick by Brick Fundraiser

We would like to thank the following families and groups for their donations and support for the Education Foundation this past year.  Look for our donors’ engraved “bricks” near the front entrance when school begins.  Installation is scheduled for the week of August 12.

Fines and Fees

As we approach the end of another school year, many students have accrued various fees and fines. Fees are accrued for unpaid athletics and/or classroom fees.  Fines are accrued when students fail to return textbooks, novels, or other classroom materials checked out to them.  Information regarding the outstanding item is available to you on RevTrak, which may be accessed via the district website. You may also pay by check or cash at the front desk.   If your child failed to return a textbook or it is damaged beyond repair, the listed fee is the replacement cost.  You do not have to pay the fee if you return the book.  If you have established a payment plan, please consider this a reminder to make a payment at this time.  If you would like to establish a payment plan, or have questions, please contact Lois Davis at 720-494-3721 or email davis_lois@svvsd.org.
