Weekly blog for October 25th

Silver Creek High School

Weekly Update for Friday, October 25th

Dear Raptor Nation,

Silver Creek has steadily been amassing many accolades throughout the Fall semester.  To name a few: 1) seventeen students were recognized by the College Board for their achievements on the Advanced Placement tests and have been recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars; 2) eighty-three students were inducted into our National Honor Society Chapter; 3) our Boy’s Golf team placed second at the state competition; 4) our Girl’s Cross Country team is making their first appearance, in school history, at the state competition; and 5) Silver Creek Volleyball, Soccer and Football have all been ranked within the top ten in state at various times.

The Silver Creek Education Foundation is preparing for another round of grants to be distributed to your child’s classroom.  Over the course of the last four years, nearly $50,000 has been distributed to teachers and students supporting initiatives such as: technology acquisition, professional development, SCLA capstone projects, textbook adoption, and support of the arts.   Now is a great time to become a supporter of the Education Foundation and contribute to the continued success of our students and teachers.

As we look to the future, we have great plans ahead for Silver Creek. We are entering into the final stages of the bond construction, which was passed in 2008. Silver Creek is in the design process of a College and Career Center along with improvements to our tennis facility.  We will also be reconfiguring each classroom to house overhead LCD projectors.  This work will take place in the summer of 2014.

Hats off to SCLA as our senior students embark upon their capstone projects.  Students will be initiating projects to: live-stream SCHS events; bring a TEDx event to SCHS; have mayors sign on for the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons; assist local non-profits; host golf tournaments for philanthropy, and support a multitude of other fantastic events.

Even though your child may be older, you are needed now more than ever!  Thank you for coming to Parent-Teacher Conferences, and thank you for continuing to engage your child in discussions related to academics, social life and plans for after high school.  Junior parents be on the lookout for Shmoop!

Sincerely,

Erick Finnestead

Principal, Silver Creek High School

Fines and Fees

Each school year students accrue various fees and fines.  Fines are assessed for lost textbooks.  Fees help pay for athletics and/or classroom extras like labs and consumable workbooks.  Fees will be attached to student accounts and will be available for payment after August 28th.   Information regarding fees is available to you on RevTrak, which may be accessed via the district website and the Silver Creek website. You may also pay by check or cash at the front  desk.   If you have questions, please contact Lois Davis at 720-494-3721 or email davis_lois@svvsd.org.

UPDATE ON DISTRICT POLICY ON CLASS FEES for Free/Reduced Students

SVVSD has amended its policy in regard to all class fees, which will affect those students designated for Free or Reduced Lunch.  Beginning this school year, students receiving free lunch will be assessed 25%of any fees associated with their classes.  Students receiving reduced lunch will be assessed 50% of applicable fees.  This policy affects class fees only and does not alter any school meal benefits.

SCHS Education Foundation

Parents

The SCHS Education Foundation provides financial support to Silver Creek teachers, staff and classrooms.  Through the generosity and the support of SCHS families and friends in the community, the Foundation has donated over $38,000 to the school.  Seventy mini-grants have been issued to SCHS teachers and staff for items such as novel sets, document cameras, laptops, Nooks, audio books, subscriptions and conference fees.  Recently, we contributed to a new laptop cart for the school.

Silver Creek parents, staff and students serve on the Board of Directors, committees and other projects.  You can help the Foundation in a number of ways:

  1. Purchase a $5 King Soopers Reloadable Fundraising Card from us.  Reload it at your convenience before your purchases and the Education Foundation will receive 5% of your purchase amounts throughout the year. Contact us at schsedfoundation@gmail.com.

  2. Donate to the Brick By Brick fundraiser and have a “brick” engraved with 3-6 lines of names/text. Icons are also available. The fall order deadline is October 15.  Order online at  schsedfoundation.org

  3. Volunteer to help on one of our projects or committees.  We need help in the following areas:

  • Design  flyers, posters and banners

  • Grant writing

  • Fundraiser Event planning committee

  • Mini-grant Committee

  • Corporate Sponsors Committee  (help us reach out to potential corporate sponsors and supporters)

  • Marketing Committee

  • Website maintenance

  • King Soopers Reloadable Card fundraiser coordinators

  • Brick By Brick Fundraiser Committee  (opportunities include marketing, maintaining orders, serve as liaison with Engraver)
