Silver Creek High School
Weekly Update for Friday, August 10th
Welcome back to Silver Creek High School and Raptor Nation! We are so very excited to begin the 2012-2013 school year. We have much to celebrate as we look back upon the 2011-2012 school year, and although we may face challenges, we are ready to take them on and turn them into future successes.
A quick recap of our accomplishments during the course of the 2011-2012 school year include:
-Raising our achievement in TCAP tests in 6 of the 7 tests administered
-16 Advanced Placement Scholars
-2 National Merit Finalists
-A Boettcher Scholarship Winner (our second in three years)
-Development of the 11th and 12th Grade Leadership Curriculum
-Implementing an ACT Preparatory Program for juniors
-Embedding a Commitment to Graduate within our School Culture
-Establishing a High Functioning Autism Program
-Competing in multiple state and national level academic contests
-Establishing CU Succeeds college credit in US History
-Piloting the Video Production course
-13 Letters of Intent to play collegiate sports
-218 of the 228 Class of 2012 graduates accepted to a two-year or four-year college.
-Many all state and all-conference musicians and athletes
-Colorado Drumline State Champions (4th consecutive)
-Recognition as a US News and World Report Silver Rated School (Top 5% of Public High Schools Nationwide)
-Construction of a new entrance that serves as both a security measure and immediate greeting
-Resurfacing of our track facilities
The list goes on as our kids and our staff remain dedicated to improving our school and community. Parents, you are a significant reason for our success as well. Your constant support of programs through volunteer hours and financial contribution is simply the reason we can continue to offer such great opportunities. There are too many accolades to list in this short letter. Better yet is what we are all going to do in 2012-2013 to make it our best year yet.
This year we have a few new staff members joining us. Marty Tonjes will take the reins as our new Athletic Director. He has previously served in great capacity at Horizon High School, providing leadership as a coach, dean, and serving on numerous school/district improvement teams. Andrea Helmus will be joining us in our Spanish Department and comes to us having taught at the collegiate level at the University of Arizona in Latin Studies. Ron Tesone will join us as our Business teacher, and arrives with multiple years of teaching experience and a desire to continue and improve our great Business Education opportunities. Mary Vigil will once again join us, but rather than attendance liaison, she will be serving our community as a Campus Supervisor.
This year Silver Creek sees its highest enrollment at 1060 students. With declining budgets from the state of Colorado over the last three years, and an uncertain economic forecast, we are all doing more with less. Our staff has been taking great care to balance class sizes and offerings, their work is nothing short of miraculous. Even more so is the generous acts our staff has taken upon themselves to help others and create or maintain others’ jobs. It hasn’t been uncommon for a coach to split his or her contract to allow for another coach to come aboard and open more opportunities for athletes, or for a teacher to voluntarily reduce his or her contract to provide for a new teacher to stay aboard. Folks, we are all truly blessed to learn and work in such a school where everyone is accepted and supported.
Welcome to the Class of 2016, to all our new students, and welcome back to all of Raptor Nation!

FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE…
If you need to sign your student out during the day, please send them to school with a note, signed by a parent, indicating the time they need to leave. Have your student take that note to the attendance office first thing in the morning, where he/she will exchange it for a pink pass that will indicate the time he/she is to be dismissed. The student should present the pass to his/her teacher at the time the student needs to leave, and then sign him/herself out at the attendance window.
