Message from the Principal, Erick Finnestead
As a function of recognizing outstanding staff members at Silver Creek and within the St. Vrain Valley School District, the Encore Awards were created. Every year staff members who are selected by students, parents, colleagues and community members are recognized. If you know someone at SCHS or in SVVSD who deserves recognition please use the following link in English Espanol .
Come join us for our Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition occurring Monday Jan. 16, 2012 from 4:00-6:00 PM. This event is free of charge and will feature a video montage, speeches, and entertainment. Thank you to our Leadership Academy and The Longmont Multicultural Council for their sponsorship.
Wednesday, our Bella Voce Choir had the wonderful opportunity to sing at the 2012 Colorado State Senate Opening Ceremonies. Please see the following link for photos and a video of our kids in action.
At this Tuesday’s Accountability Meeting we continued our discussion of acceptable dance at SCHS. We are currently drafting policy to eliminate the simulated sexual acts (bumping and grinding) that occur on the dance floor at school sponsored dances. Upon completion we will share this new policy with our students and parents. Should you have questions regarding this please feel free to direct them to me.
Share your heart and your home with 2 CIEE Students at Silver Creek High School. The two girls had an Emergency Move from their host family’s home over the weekend. They would very much like to finish the school year at Silver Creek. Please see the attached link for more information.

Volunteer Opportunity For Students
Introducing 100 Squared, a student movement matching Silver Creek students and organizations needing volunteers. This movement is taking place over the whole 2012 calendar year, with the ultimate goal being 100 volunteers, each donating 100 community service hours. However, we cannot do this without your help. Please encourage your son or daughter to join this movement. Not only will it look impressive on college admission, but will also give back to the community around us and improve our society. If you know of a nonprofit organization which needs volunteers—either in general or for a specific, upcoming event—please forward them our website: WWW.100SQUARED.ORG
Yearbook – Only 1 more week to Guarantee your copy!
On Sale Jan. 9 – 20
Attention Silver Creek parents!
We are excited about the 2012 yearbook and have been working hard to include all of the great stories and students of Silver Creek High School. We will soon be finalizing the number of books that we will be ordering, but there is still time to order your yearbook if you have not already done so. From January 9 – 20 the yearbook will be on sale for $65. You can place your order online at jostensyearbooks.com or on the SCHS Yearbook Website or in the main office at Silver Creek High School. Don’t miss out on your last chance to guarantee a 2012 yearbook for your child. If you have already purchased a book, THANK YOU! This year’s book is one you won’t want to miss!
Get your pictures in the Yearbook!
The yearbook staff cannot possibly be everywhere at once, so we’d love to have you share your favorite pictures with us to publish in this year’s book. Upload your favorite photos and they may be included in the yearbook! The yearbook staff reserves the right to refuse your photo if it is inappropriate, so please use good judgment with your submissions. Go to the Yearbook Web Page to upload your photos!
Computer speakers needed!
Many of our classrooms now have good projectors and effectively show video clips to supplement instruction. However, there are at least 4-6 classrooms that lack adequate speakers to project the sound sufficiently to promote learning. We need your help! Can you donate your old speakers or sound system to help these classrooms? If so- please contact Phil Goerner in the library for more information!
HAVE YOU PAID YOUR FIRST SEMESTER CLASS FEES? If not, these fees are overdue. Please check the District payment system (RevTrak) to see if your student(s) has outstanding fees/fines. If you wish to pay these fees by credit card, stay in the RevTrak system and follow the prompts to enter a credit card number. Please submit all cash or check payments to Mrs. Davis in the Main Office.
Fees for second semester will be posted January 17th and may be paid through RevTrak or submitted to the Main Office. Fees will not be accepted prior to the 17th.

News From the Art Department
Art Club meets every Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:00
Every week we have a new activity. Club members are welcome to participate in the activity or use the time as an open studio to work on their own art work. There is no fee; you do not need to be enrolled in an art class, and drop-ins are welcome!
Art Club will be working on maquettes for the Longmont Art in Public Places “shock art” program. The program is a community art project that will see electrical boxes close to Silver Creek High School and around the City transformed into colorful and creative works of art. Everyone is invited to submit an idea/design. The winning design will be painted in the spring. Leave a legacy at Silver Creek High School.
Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923, with a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.
The Awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. Each year, the Alliance partners with more than 100 organizations across the country (each focused on visual and literary arts) to bring The Awards to local communities. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.
Contact Mrs. Giese for more information or check out the following link.
The Arts Prepare Students for School, Work, and Life As this country works to strengthen our foothold in the 21st Century global economy, the arts equip students with a creative, competitive edge. To succeed in today’s economy of ideas, students must masterfully use words, images, sounds, and movement to communicate. The arts provide the skills and knowledge students need to develop the creativity and determination necessary for success in today’s global information age.
Silver Creek Education Foundation
Please consider donating to the Education Foundation’s 10 for 10 campaign. We hope to collect over $10,000 to support Tech Equity – the technology initiative which will eventually provide two laptop carts for use in all Silver Creek classrooms, along with smart boards, laptops and document cameras in every classroom that would like to take advantage of such technology.
Our school is celebrating our 10th anniversary and with your support we can continue to celebrate academic success at SCHS. Given recent state and district budget cuts, our school needs your continued support now more than ever.
Please go to www.stvrain.k12.co.us and donate directly through our PayPal account. Checks can be made out to SCHS Education Foundation and sent in to the school office. Questions? Check out our website or contact Michelle Foster, President, at firstname.lastname@example.org or Eric Ottem, SCHS Administrator at 720-494-3721.
Parents, in an effort to reduce expenses, we are asking for volunteers to run the scoreboard and keep the score book for home boys and girls basketball lower level games. Experience is very welcome, but you will be given instruction if you have never done it before. All volunteers will not be expected to pay to attend the games they work. If you are available and willing please contact Melissa Lehman in the office. I am looking forward to a very successful winter season!!!
Also, a friendly reminder that we do charge admission for all levels of basketball games and wrestling matches. Contact Melissa Lehman if you wish to purchase one.
Girls’ soccer will be having OPTIONAL winter training most Mondays and Wednesdays during January and February at the Boulder County Fairgrounds Exhibit Building from 6-7:30PM. On Fridays the captains will be leading a training session after school. “HOME OF THE RAPTORS” Banner
Postnet has graciously donated a 10′ x 3′ banner to be used by our clubs, music department and athletic teams. It would be great to see it hanging at competitions and other events. The only two rules so far are:
1. It needs to signed out in the office with Melissa Lehman and returned the next day
2. Cross-town rival events get first priority
Enjoy the banner and hang it with Pride!!!
