SCHS weekly blog for February 17th

Silver Creek High School

Weekly Update for Friday, February 17th

A message from the Principal
Raptor Nation,
Congratulations to our boys and girls winter sports upon the successful completion of their regular season.  Many individuals and teams are still leading the competition in state tournaments.
This weekend our three time defending state champion Drumline will be hosting the regional preliminary competition.  This event will bring hundreds of students to Silver Creek High School.  Thank you to our Performing Arts parents for your sponsorship of this event and for hosting our guests.
TCAP/CSAP testing is scheduled for March 13, 14, 15 and 20.  Freshmen are scheduled for testing on March 13, 14, 15.  Sophomores are scheduled for March 13, 14, 15, 20.  Please see the link for the TCAP Schedule.  Two classes will occur in the afternoon each day.  All students must be in attendance for afternoon classes.
Junior ACT preparation will also be occurring on March 13, 14, 15, 20.  We have chosen to take advantage of this timing with an opportunity that can only benefit our junior students. All juniors must be in attendance for the full day on March 13, 14, 15 and 20.  Juniors will begin each day in the auditorium at 7:15 for a quick lesson related to ACT and then be released to their ACT subject-specific classroom.  Juniors will follow a four-day rotation of related test-taking strategies, content review and individual test preparation.  Each day your junior student will rotate and receive instruction in one of four areas of the ACT: English, Math, Science, Reading.  Silver Creek instructors will be providing the preparation free of charge.  We are also planning for the Princeton review to provide feedback to students who participated in the ACT practice test during this time frame.
Don’t forget to register for next year’s courses.  If you need assistance please schedule an appointment with your respective counselor.

Sincerely,
Erick Finnestead
Principal, Silver Creek High School

In the Spring of 2012, 9th and 10th grade students will be taking the TCAP (formerly known as CSAP).  This standards-based test is used by schools across Colorado to measure student proficiency in reading, writing, math and science.  Results of this test help us to construct academic schedules, develop goals, identify strengths and weaknesses in instructional programming and create a body of evidence based upon group and individual student performance(s).  Here is a link to information regarding the TCAP.  We will be publishing a schedule in the coming weeks that details the assessment schedule on March 13, 14, 15 and 20.
Check out this presentation by Nathan Palmer aimed at supporting our 10 for 10 technology fundraising campaign.  10 for 10 Some devices may not be able to support the refresh rate.  For more information on 10 for 10 click here.

Congratulations to our honor roll recipients for Semester 1!  Great job students and teachers!

The Arts Prepare Students for School, Work, and Life
As this country works to strengthen our foothold in the 21st Century global economy, the arts
equip students with a creative, competitive edge. To succeed in today’s economy of ideas,
students must masterfully use words, images, sounds, and movement to communicate. The
arts provide the skills and knowledge students need to develop the creativity and
determination necessary for success in today’s global information age.

Silver Creek Education Foundation

Please consider donating to the Education Foundation’s 10 for 10 campaign.  We hope to collect over $10,000 to support Tech Equity – the technology initiative which will eventually provide two laptop carts for use in all Silver Creek classrooms, along with smart boards, laptops and document cameras in every classroom that would like to take advantage of such technology.
Our school is celebrating our 10th anniversary and with your support we can continue to celebrate academic success at SCHS.  Given recent state and district budget cuts, our school needs your continued support now more than ever.
Please go to www.stvrain.k12.co.us and donate directly through our PayPal account.  Checks can be made out to SCHS Education Foundation and sent in to the school office.  Questions?  Check out our website or contact Michelle Foster, President, at mmfoster1@qwestoffice.net or Eric Ottem, SCHS Administrator at 720-494-3721.

Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing for the chance to earn scholarships and have their works exhibited or published.

SCHS Weekly blog for January 6th

Silver Creek High School

Weekly Update for Friday, January 6th

Message from the Principal, Erick Finnestead

Welcome back and Happy New Year!  What are you going to do to make 2012 your best year yet?
Here at Silver Creek we are looking forward to great things for second semester.  If you have not heard, “Grease” is the word.  This fantastic production will showcase the talents of a large cast; be on the lookout for ticketing information soon.  We’ve also been notified that our Art Department has made it to the final round in the Lucerne Cow Contest.  So keep another eye out for our “Vance Brand” Bovine.  More information will follow as this social campaign to vote for winners could bring upwards of $20,000 to the winning school.

Spring is also the season of standardized testing.  Those enrolled in AP classes will be taking their AP exams in May.  Juniors will participate in ACT testing on April 24.  Freshmen and Sophomores will be taking the annual CSAP (the transition test is now known as CTAP) assessment on March 13, 14, 15 and 20.

Winter Athletics are in full swing and enjoying success.  Come on out and support our teams.  Our Silver Creek Leadership Academy is partnering with the Longmont Council on Multicultural Affairs with two events to to be held at SCHS in recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

First Semester final grades will posted to transcripts by Wednesday Jan. 11, 2012.
Wishing you the best in 2012,
Erick Finnestead

Volunteer Opportunity For Students

Introducing 100 Squared, a student movement matching Silver Creek students and organizations needing volunteers.  This movement is taking place over the whole 2012 calendar year, with the ultimate goal being 100 volunteers, each donating 100 community service hours.  However, we cannot do this without your help.  Please encourage your son or daughter to join this movement.  Not only will it look impressive on college admission, but will also give back to the community around us and improve our society.  If you know of a nonprofit organization which needs volunteers—either in general or for a specific, upcoming event—please forward them our website:  WWW.100SQUARED.ORG

Upload your favorite photos and they may be included in the yearbook! The yearbook staff reserves the right to refuse your photo if it is inappropriate, so please use good judgment with your submissions. Go to the Yearbook Web Page to upload your photos!

Looking for a home for your old E-Readers?

This Christmas are you looking to upgrade to the newest Kindle Fire? How about the color Nook? If you are, do you need to find a home for your older eReaders? The Silver Creek Library is requesting donations of Nooks, Kindles and even iPod Touches/iPods that could still hold texts and audio books. The library has purchased some, but are currently seeking additional machines because they offer valuable opportunities for reading and study for our students! You can even donate books for Nooks! Contact Phil (x45713) or Lynn in the library if you would like more information!

YOU HAVE THE POWER; TURN IT OFF!

Silver Creek High School is participating in a contest called Renew Our Schools.  This is a contest to reduce the amount of energy we use in our school and our homes.  At school we will be reducing our energy use as we compete with 13 other schools in St. Vrain Valley School District and Boulder Valley School District.  We can also earn points in the contest by having families participate with us.

We invite you to participate and help us earn points towards $25,000 of solar panels for our school.  What we need from you is to go to this website: http://www.renewourschoolsenergycenter.com/default.asp?PageID=1 and look at Conservation at Home.  Please print off the Home Energy Action checklist to see how you can reduce the use of energy in your home.  Then, enter your results under the Conservation at Home page from the above web address.  When entering your results, please enter Silver Creek HS as your school so we can earn the points.  Also, check out the rest of the website to understand more about the contest.  A few minutes of your time can earn the school $25,000!

We really appreciate your time and efforts in helping Silver Creek High School and our community reduce our use of energy.  Please turn in results by January 4th.  Whichever Silver Creek class turns in the most completed Energy Audit Forms from the website will earn a breakfast burrito party.  So let’s TURN IT OFF!!
Thank you,
Sustainability Club

Health Information

Each student should have received a health information form.   This form is required for all students and accuracy is essential.   Any new health issues and/or medications will be updated on the Student Health and Emergency Information form sent out each spring.  If a student is required to take oral medication during school hours and the parent/guardian cannot be at school to administer medications, only the health clerk or other trained staff members can administer medication.  (This includes over-the-counter medicines.)  Written orders from the student’s health care provider must be on file in the school.

If your student carries an inhaler or epi-pen during school hours you will need to fill out an individual health form and obtain permission to carry from their doctor. If needed, I can provide you with the necessary forms.  (I am happy to fax the forms to your physician when his/her signature is required).

Parents, please complete the form and have your student return it to the health office ASAP.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
