Justin Bieber is no longer a teenager in “Purpose”
Canadian singer Justin Bieber returns with his fifth album entitled Purpose. Released November 13, 2015, the album quickly sold over a million copies. The first taste of new Bieber music came via his collaboration with Jack Ü (the super DJ duo of Diplo and Skrillex) and their track “Where Are Ü Now.” This song showcased a little bit of Electronic dance music (EDM).
Bieber’s fifth album has a diverse palette of electro-dance sounds: soft smooth verses, chipmunk sounding vocals, rattling trap hi-hats, and a lot of bass. The album has not only a variety of music but artists as well: from Kanye West, Skrillex, Diplo, and even Ariana Grande.
His past albums Believe and Journals, his attempt to transition from teenage years to adulthood, went unnoticed and unrecognized. Then at the end of 2015, the album Purpose was released and changed everything for Bieber. The singles off of Purpose include: “What Do You Mean?” and “Sorry.” These songs are his first hits that aren’t considered “teenage music” anymore but rather more geared towards an adult audience.
The first half of his album has a lot of music and sounds that are perfect for parties, dancing, or jamming out with friends. However, the second half of the album shows Bieber’s softer and more emotional side. Songs such as “Love Yourself” expose a deeper and more mature side to Bieber as he expresses the importance of staying true to who you are. The last song on the album, “Children, ” focuses on an embarrassing and overwrought attempt at social consciousness.
When you listen to the album, you can’t help but think that a lot of these songs are about his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez. If you thought this, then you aren’t wrong. A lot of these songs are about Gomez they were inspired by her. As Bieber stated in a interview for the Rolling Stones, “A lot of my inspiration comes from [her]. It was a long relationship and a relationship that created heartbreak and created happiness, and a lot of different emotions that I wanted to write about. So there’s a lot of that on this album.”
From My World, his very first album released in 2009, to Purpose, it is clear that Bieber has been through a lot and has grown over the past few years. Despite the past fews years of trouble and tabloid stories, it seems that Justin Bieber is proving his talent and standing in the music industry once again.
